Circles – Post Malone

Released on September 6th of this year, Circles is one of Malone’s top hits of his new album, Hollywood’s Bleeding. Post Malone is an American rapper, singer, songwriter and record producer. His musical style often blends music genres together, mainly hip-hop and rock into the beats with laconic vocals.

The song’s mellow groove uses rock as the base tune with slow elements of hip-hop to create chill vibes which complements its lyrics. In this song, Post Malone talks about recognizing relationships which are no good anymore and recognizing the action of escape, only to run back towards it.

We couldn’t turn around ’til we were upside down
I’ll be the bad guy now, but know I ain’t too proud
I  couldn’t be there even when I tried
You  don’t believe it, we do this every time

Seasons change and our love went cold
Feed the flame ’cause we can’t let go
Run away, but we’re running in circles

I dare you to do something
I’m waiting on you again, so I don’t take the blame
Run away, but we’re running in circles

This song, like most of Post Malone’s songs, talks about being addicted to something that’s no good for you, understanding that situations might suck, but there’s nothing else to do but return to it. As an artist, he puts his heart, soul, and pain into his work, and it’s felt in his singing and his lyrics.

Circles is a melancholy song, and I often find my mood changes how I experience the song. This is why I think this song is so good. Despite Malone’s personal intent to the song, the overall mood of this song is so ambiguous that it could be used as a 3 AM cry session in your car, but also as “phew glad i got myself out of that predicament” song.

Post Malone is an extremely underrated artist, and songs like Circles is one of the reasons why I think this. He is a super versatile artist that can easily hype up a fully sold out stadium or make them have a feels session right then and there.
